Our approach to IVDD risk
We test our breeding dogs for the CDDY-associated FGF4 variant, which is associated with disc degeneration and an increased risk of intervertebral disc herniation. A test result identifies the variant—not whether or when an individual dog will develop clinical signs. It also does not account for every possible cause of IVDD.
We consider each dog’s result as one factor in our breeding decisions, alongside overall health and genetic diversity. We encourage families to maintain a healthy weight, follow their veterinarian’s advice about activity, and seek veterinary care promptly for back or neck pain, wobbliness, weakness, or difficulty walking. These steps support general health but cannot guarantee that IVDD will be prevented.
